Things you
should do every Day.
Scan your disk quickly Run Windows Scan Disk to check for
cross linked files and other problems. For a quicker
scan, turn off the surface scan option. Put the program
Shortcut in your startup folder so your disk gets scanned
every time you load Windows.
Things you
should do every Two Weeks.
Defrag your Hard Drive. Set your defragging software to
its slowest and most complete setting, get it started,
then turn off the monitor and take a long lunch break, or
leave it overnight.
Things you
should do every Month.
Update your Virus Definitions Your anti virus program
vendor regularly posts updates that help the software
spot the latest in malevolent engineering. Grab the
updates off the vendors Web site, or use the program's
built-in update tool.
Things To
Do Once
Make Emergency Boot Floppies To create your basic Windows
9x emergency boot disk, insert a floppy, go to the Start
menu, and select settings-control panel. Double click on
add/remove programs, click the startup disk tab, and
click create disk button. The resulting disk will contain
a number of DOS-based utilities for examining and fixing
your system.
