SHINBUKAN OPEN

International Budo Games

Memorial tournament of Slobodan Saric

Požarevac, Serbia, 24th of February 2007

On the first anniversary of early death of late Slobodan Saric sensei, one of best sportsmen in Pozarevac, jujutsu and japanese fencing sensei, former KIAI member, Pozarevac jujutsu and kenjutsu club SHINBUKAN, headed by Dr. Ivica Zdravkovic, hosted an international tournament in martial arts/combat sports, which has gathered over 150 participants from five countries: Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Italy and Sweden. These budo games were attended from 12 jujutsu and kenjutsu/chanbara clubs from Serbia, including ones from Belgrade, Vrsac, Sremska Mitrovica, Sabac, Smederevo, Petrovac, Kraljevo, Perlez... The most numerous and the most successful foreign teams came from Sarajevo and from Gunja (Croatia). Tournament was well organized and took place in Elementary School "Desanka Maksimovic".

Competitors participated in goshin jutsu competition (demonstration of self-defense), japanese fencing (sport kenjutsu) and jujutsu fights. In strong concurrence of self-defense teams, the most successful were teams from Croatia, with two gold medals, followed by Shinbukan teams with three silver medals, and teams from Sarajevo, Sabac and Sremska Mitrovica.

The most successful in sport kenjutsu and tanto were competitors from Pozarevac, who won all but one gold medal in these disciplines, with total of 13 medals out of 20. There was an extremely large concurrence in male senior division, with 27 fighters - swordsmen.

Serbian Budo Council has once more proved the right of calling itself the largest and the best jujutsu organization in Serbia. Jujutsu fights were conducted under the rules of three rounds (first round similar to karate, second round similar to judo wresting, and third round similar to judo and BJJ groundfight). Heaviest categories were dominated by contestants from Vrsac and Belgrade, in middle categories the best were fighters from Sarajevo, Croatia and Pozarevac, and in the youngest/lightest categories the most successful were competitors from Croatia, Pozarevac and Petrovac na Mlavi. The value of medals won on this tournament is illustrated by the fact that in certain categories there were more than 20 contestants.

At the end of the tournament, the host and organizer, Dr. Ivica Zdravkovic and the Saric family have invited all the participants to come again next year and to participate on Slobodan Saric memorial tournament, which will become a traditional international sport event for jujutsu and sport kenjutsu.

On Sunday 25th of February, a seminar for Budo Games participants was held. In the morning part of the seminar lecturers came from Pozarevac club Wing Chun, as well as from  aikido, aiki jujutsu and jujutsu clubs from Belgrade, Vrsac and Veliko Gradiste. In the afternoon class sensei Andreas Lundgren from Sweden held a mini-course in Seitei iaido for members of Shinbukan school.
