Line guide - Wrapping - for rod repair or building

It is a must to keep your equipment in good repair to make your next trip a pleasurable one. To keep that rod casting right check the line guides for cracks, bent or worn eyes. You can find new guides at your local tackle shop or a sporting store if replacement is needed.  Measure the guide or take it with you for the correct replacement. They come in various sizes and colors. The items need for guide replacement, are simple. Some tape, a razorblade either heavy thread to match the color on your rod or some monofilament line, a heavy book and a yardstick.

Tape one end of the guide foot to the rod make sure it is lined up with the other guides (eyeball or use yard stick against the other guides on both side of the new guide to line up). On the other guide foot start to wrap the thread a head of the guide foot, wrapping the thread over of itself approximately 2-3 rotations until that foot is secure against the rod. (figure A) After about 6 or 7 rotations cut off the loose end as close to the wrap as possible. Continue winding over the guide foot. At a point approximately 6 or 8 turns from the ring of the guide. Insert your tie off end loop by doubling the thread with the ends away from the guide ring. (figure B) Wind the remaining turns over the over the loop.

Hold the wrap tightly against the rod and cut off the wrapping thread approximately 4” from the rod. While holding the wrap tightly insert the cut end through the loop. (figure C) Keep holding the wrap against the rod tightly with the other hand pull the tie-off loop out from under the wrap. The cut off end of the thread will follow the loop out. (Figure D) Pull the thread, tightly use the razorblade to cut of the excess thread as closely as possible.

Repeat for the other foot of the guide. Also make sure the wraps are evenly next to one another. After you do a couple of guides you will find that it is very easy. You might even try building your own custom rod.
