Dakshika Bandaranayake.
April 27th, 2003.
The Sri Lankan
student community of the University of Cincinnati,
OH, took the
initiative to a seemingly overwhelming, but rewarding experience in
organizing a New Year event in April 2003. Much commitment and
self-involvement in the part of the Executive Committee and members of
the Sri Lankan Student Association (SLSA) as well as other Sri Lankans
living in
Cincinnati made this event a great success.
This event was timely
to commemorate the
Sinhala and Hindu New Year (“Avurudu”) and consisted
of many highlights that are of “Avurudu” spirit. To bring many smiles to
the audience, the event started with delightful performances by our
little ones, who added a lot of color to the evening. This was followed
by fun-filled New Year games in which adults and kids took part with
much enthusiasm. These games added a lot of laughter and a little
nostalgia to the Sri Lankan crowd present.
A major highlight of
the event was of course, the Avurudu Meal that was prepared with the
contribution of all. Everyone greatly enjoyed traditional meal items
such as “Kiribath” (Milk Rice), “Kevum” (Oil Cakes), and other “rasa
kevili” (sweetmeats) from Sri Lankan cuisine that made the Avurudu Meal
a complete one.
Many wonderful solo
dances, group dances and vocal performances lighted the latter part of
the event. It was clear to the audience how talented our Sri Lankan
youngsters were who gave memorable performances that evening.
Not only the Sri
Lankans that were present, but also the invited guests highly enjoyed
every moment of this New Year celebration. It was with sweet memories of
the day that everybody went home that evening.

VESAK Daham Program
"VESAK"
is the most important day of the year to all Buddhists scattered around the
globe. The significance of "VESAK" lies with the
Buddha and his universal
peace message to mankind.
Vesak day is filled with great historical
events, and there are three events that stands out and we all remember for
our life time. The
Buddha's birth, as Prince Siddhartha took place on this
day at "Lumbini" in Kapilavastu (modern Nepal), Ascetic Siddhartha Gautama
attained Enlighment, on Vesak Day at "Buddha Gaya" under the sacred Bodhi
Tree, and The Supreme Buddha's Great Demise (Parinibbana), happened on this
Full moon day at "Kusinara".
To commemorate all these special events, SLSA
organized a Dhamma Talk which was delivered by Venerable Bante Rahuala.
Speech was filled with the importance of Vesak and as Buddhists how we can
incorporate Dhamma in to our lives, so we can live our lives with peace and
harmony.
Also it was a great pleasure to see the
participation of the Cincinnati crowd which made the event a success.
May Triple Gem Bless You All!
