Personal Profile
Born
in Suzhou in 1946, Zhu Dalin, styled the whetted Hermit, is an active member of the
National Calligraphers' Association and of the Cang Lang (water waves) Study Society.
Also, he sits on the board of the Suzhou Association of calligraphers. Presently, he is
serving as Vice Director of Dongwu (Suzhou) Seal-Engraving Society and enjoys renown as
Master of Arts & Crafts with the Suzhou Research Institute of Light Industry.
Coming from a
long family line of calligraphers and painters, Zhu took to calligraphy as early as at
four years of age, and was introduced into the arts of painting by his father, Zhu
Meichun, and then,by his maternal uncle,Wu Hufan who was a master painter of
national fame. The many visits he paid to prominent artists during his
learning-acquisition tours around Shanghai and Jiangsu regions in his twenties ended by
fashioning him into a calligrapher-painter with uniquely his own styles. And he
exquisitely polished these styles later on through a conscientious tapping of
centuries-old Chinese calligraphy and painting traditions dating back to Qin
Dynasty-Han Dynasty incriptions, to the Tang Dynasty typed regular script and to the
scripts as those appearing on ancient bamboo tablets, silk, bits of paper, and stones and
walls across China. Zhu Dalin has won many a prize in both national and international
calligraphy and painting show-contests. Quite a number of masterpieces he has produced
have enjoyed intensive media coverage in Suzhou and elsewhere. For one example, "Look
at Suzhou" which is a Suzhou Cable TV program, once went to great details in an
audio-visual exposition of Zhu's works. When broadcastered on the U.S. based Panda channel,
the program featuring the said exposition excited warm acclaim. Zhu's outstanding artistic
achievements have been well-acknowledged in China. As evidence,he is co-author of "A
Dictionary Toward a Full Appreciation of Master Calligraphy" as well as of "A
Dictionary Toward a Full Appreciation of Chinese Calligraphy and Inscription". As to
his influence across national borders, it can be well attested to by the fact that there
was mounted the show "Peripatetic Life Inside the Hanshan Temple-----A Collection of
Zhu Dalin's Works" in Japan in the eighth year of the reign of the present-day
monarch of Japan. Also his calligraphy works has been adopted in the book" Teaching
of Hang Styled Calligraphy" as models for students in China Art Academic School.
