Robin Yarrow, Fiji's Ambassador to Japan, attended the very first presentation of the Zero Emissions Research Initiative, ZERI, in
Tokyo on July 6, 1994. In 1995 he contacted Gunter Pauli, founder and Director of ZERI. ZERI was looking for places to set up the first testing facility for its Integrated Biosystem (IBS), and Ambassador Yarrow suggested that Fiji should be studied as a potential location.
Arranged by the agricultural department of Fiji, Mr. Pauli visited Fiji in 1995. He toured the country and looked at various sites. When he finally visited Montfort Boys' Town, he decided that this was the place he was looking for. It had the space required, and continuity and committment for the continuous operation of the IBS could also be ensured, guaranteed by the Brothers of St. Gabriel. Also, Montfort Boys' Town is dedicated to education and offers a chance to teach the students about the IBS, so that, when they go home they will have the chance to practice what they learned. With financing from the sponsors, Ogihara Ecology from Japan, EBARA through the United Nations University, ZERI Foundation, and the Government of Fiji, Prof. George Chan arrived in Montfort Boys' Town for the first time in November 1995, and in April/May 1996 he began planning and constructing the ponds and the digester. In November 1997, the digester was in operation. The IBS at Montfort Boys' Town was officially inagurated by President Ratu Sir K. Mara on November 13th 1997. The success of the Integrated Biosystem at Montfort Boys' Town has been recognised world wide, and it has been selected as one of the EXPO 2000 projects for the world exhibition in Hannover, the EXPO 2000. This website is an introduction to the Integrated Biosystem developed by ZERI. It shows and explains the different steps in the circular flow of resources, using the waste generated in one step as an input in another. There is also a short introduction to the general principles and purpose of the ZERI IBS. The website will be continuously updated, showing the evolving process of the system, sharing lessons learned and showing how profits can be generated from what was formerly known as waste. |
