Andromeda - The Andromeda Galaxy, also known by its catalog numbers M31 or NGC224, is the closest large galaxy to our own and is also the largest in our Local Group of galaxies. A line drawn from Vega to the northeast through Deneb and extended twice as far will, end up in the constellation Andromeda. This faint smudge is the farthermost object that can be seen with the unassisted eye. It is in fact 2.2 million light years away, and is a galaxy of some 100 billion stars, very similar in size and spiral configuration to our own galaxy, the Milky Way.

APRO - Aerial Phenomenon Research Organisation. The worlds longest running UFO group started in 1952.

Area 33 - Technical area at Los Alamos National Laboratories is the most remote area in the main Los Alamos complex. It was once used for explosive tests and is now employed for a variety of low intensity scientific activities, including the area's most obvious feature, an impressive radiotelescope. Apart from an internet report of alien artifacts being kept below ground at TA-33, there appears to be nothing particularly secret or unusual about the site.

Area 51 - The Groom Lake testing facility inside the southern border of the Nellis Air Force Base and 80 miles NNW of Las Vegas. It is believed that here the US government is testing secret black project aircraft from back engineered crashed alien ships. The U-2 spy plane, the SR-71 Blackbird and the F-117 Stealth Bomber were all tested at Area 51 before their public appearances.

Arnold, Kenneth - The man to coin the word "flying saucer." His sighting happened on June 24th. 1947, over the Cascade Mountains in Washington. "Flying saucer" was used to describe the way they moved, but a misunderstanding gave us the common name for alien ships we use even today.

ATIC - Air Technical Intelligence Center. A controlling agency at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base for Project Blue Book. A top secret document, Estimate of the Situation, said that ATIC concluded that UFOs were interplanetary ships. The document was ordered to be burned in 1948 by Hoyt Vandenburg.

B

D

DIA - Defense Intelligence Agency. Established in 1961 by Secretary of State Robert McNamara to coordinate intelligence projects.

Disinformation - A term given to false information used to sway people from the truth. Governments use this technique to cover up knowledge of UFOs by leaking lies to the public.

Dreamland - A nickname for Area 51.

E

Element 115 - A substance not found or replicated on Earth that Robert Lazar says is needed to power the gravity generators on alien crafts. When element 115 is modified, Lazar claims that a subatomic reaction occurs that will produce a stable isotope of itself. The isotope is then used in the generators that bends spacetime around the craft. Its as if the craft is unmoving and space around it is moving around.

ET Exposure Law - Look under the special section for the ET Exposure Law.

F

Face on Mars - A strange rock formation on the Cydonia mesa on Mars. Pictures taken by the Viking spacecraft have photographed this face, along with some ruins and a pyramid nearby. Some, like Richard Hoagland, believe that the face and the city were built by some kind of artificial intelligence.

Fire in the Sky - Big screen movie based on the Travis Walton abduction case. It isn't a true documentary, various facts have been missed out or changed to make the film more interesting.

Flying Saucer - The name Kenneth Arnold gave to the UFOs in his encounter on June 24, 1947, describing the way they moved. He said they moved as a saucer would across water. The term was misused to describe the shape of the craft, and the name has stuck ever since.

FOIA - Freedom of Information Act. The public can use this act to declassify certain documents by blocking out the classified portions. The act has many loopholes, the fact that the goverment can deny the existence of such documents or say they pertain to national security and not declassify any part of them.

Foo Fighters - Shiny metallic-like spheres spotted during World War II by military personel. After the war, neither side claimed ownership of the Foo Fighters. The name Foo Fighters comes from a comic strip phrase "where there's foo their's fire."

Friedman, Stanton - UFO researcher/Nuclear physicist & Author. He tends to deal with the more controversial aspects of UFO Retrievals and FOIA documentation.

G

Ghost Rockets - Sightings of these ghost rockets started in 1946 in Scandanavia. They were said to look like missiles with a flame exhaust at one end. Reports stated that some of these rockets even landed and exploded. Scientists analyzed parts of a supposed ghost rocket and determined it to be an organic substance similar to carbide.

Greys - The most common types of aliens seen in abduction scenarios. They are usually four to five feet tall, grey skin, no nose, and large black eyes. It is said that they are from the Zeta Reticulli star system.

Gulf Breeze Sightings - Gulf Breeze, a small town in the pan handle of Florida, has been saturated with UFO sightings since 1987. The man who had taken most of the UFO pictures in Gulf Breeze is Ed Walters, who claims he can sense a UFO is close by a humming nose in his head. When he would sense a UFO, he would rush outside with a camera and take a picture of it waiting in the sky.

H

Hangar 18 - Alleged storage facility for early crash retrievals.

Hill Abduction Case - See a move detailed report in the abductions section

Hynek Classification System - Expanded upon in the classification section

Hynek, Dr. J. Allen - He was America's leading UFO researcher and Astronomer and the chief Air Force's scientific consultant.

Hypnotic Regression - The technique where a person is put into a hypnotic trance and asked questions about a supposed UFO abduction. The theory is that all that you see and hear is stored in the subconscious. This technique is unreliable, since a person may be thinking of something else and gets the two mixed up, or the results could be misinterpreted. It has also been proven that pathological liars can lie under hypnotic regression.

J

K

Kuiper Belt - The ring of ice that circles around the solar system 37 to 59 A.U. from the sun.

L

Lazar, Robert - A physicist who claims to have worked on crashed alien craft in the Area 51 base. He has a masters in physics and electronics. He worked at Los Alamos as a technician and then as a physicist in the Polarized Proton Section, which dealt with particle accelerators. He also developed a car that runs off hydrogen in his spare time. Lazar appeared on KLAS TV in March of 1989 after being fired from his position to speak out against the secret base. He claimed to have worked at the S-4 base, ten miles south of Area 51. He was hired in December 1988 to reverse engineer a saucer which used gravity waves as propulsion. The gravity generators used element 115, which does not occur on earth. A kilogram (2.2 pounds) of this elements can release the same amount of energy as 47 10-megaton hydrogen bombs. On March 23, 1989, he took a few friends, which included John Lear, to view a test flight of one of the crafts. On June 4, 1989, Lazar and Lear were caught and Lazar resigned the next day after being threatened.

Lear, John - Creator of the Lear Hypothesis, or the Dark Side Hypothesis. Basically and briefly, his hypothesis is that the government has collected all the crafts from UFO crashes and has tried to reverse engineer them. The US government then made a deal with the aliens which stated that the aliens could be in control of a section of S-4 and abduct as many people as they want, in return for a list of the abductees and their technology. In 1978/79, the aliens killed 44 scientists and most of a Delta Force strike team sent in to rescue them. The deal being broken, the aliens were abducting about 1 in 10 humans, mutilating them, then replacing them with androids they manufactured in underground factories. Then in the 1980's, he said that the aliens and the government struck another bargain for more technology. Lear claims that these abductees have implants in them to control them and be the ideal drone army if the time should come.

Los Alamos - One of the locations where the Roswell debris was allegedly first taken in 1947.

M

Majestic - The highest security level known, effectively 38 levels higher than Top Secret. Documents about S-4/ Area51 are classified as Majestic.

Men In Black - People that drive around in shiny black cars and wear black suits whose goal is to apparently threaten UFO witnesses so that they don't retell what they have seen. No one is sure about the origins of the MIB.

Missing Time - The phenomena of time spaces for which you have no memory of. Abductees usually have a segment of missing time from when they were abducted. There is no limit to the amount of time one can miss.

Moore, William - An ex-teacher who was involved in the Roswell investigation. Moore decided to go into the writing profession in 1979, and was a member of APRO before becoming a board member. He received disinformation from Richard Doty, a government employees, which he was to pass on in return for information about UFOs. He then learned that the government had three living aliens in government facilities all over the US. When he decided to go public with this information, along with two of Doty's conspirators, it was considered a joke by all. Some of the information the conspirators gave was facts like the aliens liked Tibetan music and strawberry ice cream.

N

NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration. NASA was founded in 1958 to direct space research in the US. It has many programs, one of which is thought to research the UFO phenomena.

NORAD - North American Aerospace Defense Command. NORAD was established to protect the US from a Soviet missile strike or any air attack. Each year, NORAD receives 25,000 UFO sightings, of which a small percentage remains unknown.

NRO - National Reconnaissance Office. The NRO has the task of overseeing our spy satellites and international communication. The NRO is believed to be responsible for recovered alien crafts and connected projects.

O

Oeschler, Robert - Oeschler joined the Air Force in 1968 and joined a filming crew whose job it was to film classified prototype weapons systems during the Vietnam war. He spent eighteen months working at Wright-Patterson AFB before working for NASA on mission analysis and prototype control and mobile surveillance systems. Oeschler claims to get his information from contacts within the intelligence community.

P

Paranet - A moderated forum started in 1986 dedicated to the paranormal and UFOs. It was originally sent out as e-mail newletters, now it consists of newsgroups on Usenet. It was Paranet that spread the news about Robert Lazar.

Project Aquarius - A top secret project started in 1953 to amass as much data as possible on alien life forms and then distribute this information to relevant projects. William Moore released three pages of a Project Aquarius briefing document, but most consider this to be a fake because of the poor presentation of the document.

Project Blue Book - The last acknowledged USAF investigation into UFOs which started in March 1952. Blue Book's purpose was to find explanations for sightings, assess if they were a threat to national security, and determine if any alien technology could be captured. Most sightings were explained away with the usual explanations: airplanes, wind patterns, asteroids, and the like. A very small percentage of the sightings actually went unexplained.

Project Galileo - A project at S-4 dealing with recovered alien crafts.

Project Grudge - The successor of Project Sign, which was launched to denounce the UFO problem. Journalists were encouraged by the military to write articles about how UFOs can't exist. Project Grudge was shut down in 1950.

Project Mogul - A secret project aimed at trying to detect sound waves from nuclear explosions by a receiver on a weather balloon. It is one of these balloons which the government claim to be the UFO that crashed at Roswell.

Project Pounce - Set up in 1953 to investigate all UFO sightings in order to gain space technology knowledge.

Project Sigma - Officially, a laser weapons research program, but some believe that this project's aim is to find a way to communicate with aliens.

Project Sign - The first official USAF investigation into UFOs. The project started in January 1948 and lasted until February 1949, when 20% of the cases were unexplainable.

Pulse Detonation Engine - A strong and powerfull engine that could bring a plane up to about Mach 8. It is believed that the Aurora plane uses a pulse detonation engine to reach high speeds.

Q

R

Ramey, General Roger - General Roger Ramey was the officer who took charge of the Roswell incident when it became apparent that the release of the 'US captures Flying Disk' had been a grave mistake. He immediately ordered the release of a second press release indicating that the debris found was that of a weather balloon.

Roswell - A city in South East New Mexico, approximately 120 miles west of Lubbock, Texas, and 130 miles northeast of El Paso. A UFO crashed near Corona, New Mexico, in July 1947 during a violent thunderstorm at night. Mac Brazel, the owner of the ranch at which the ship crashed, found some wreckage spread out over a half mile which neither him or his family could identify. He took some wreckage three days latter to the sheriff, George Wilcox, who then contacted Roswell Air Army Field and told Major Jesse Marcel the situation. Marcel inspected the wreckage Brazel brought and reported to his commander, William Blanchard. Blanchard ordered Marcel to get someone from counter intelligence to load up all the wreckage they could from Brazel's ranch onto their trucks and ship it to Washington. The next day, Sheridan Cavitt from counter intelligence and Marcel collected the wreckage. Marcel was intrigued with a piece of foil that when folded up, would return to its unfolded condition with no creases. A press released was issued on July 2, stating that they had recovered a saucer. A day later, the story was retracted and the military said they had a weather balloon.

S

S-4 - There are three S-4s in the Nevada Test Site, one is a nuclear reactor, another is an area south of the Tonopah test range, and the other is Papoose Dry Lake bed, ten miles south of Area 51, in which Robert Lazar has claimed to worked in.

SETI - The Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence. A government-funded program that monitors radio wave emissions from space. It is believed that these radio waves would be communications between intelligent civilizations. If any abnormal emissions are received, SETI will investigate and try to find out the source of the transmission.

T

Tesla, Nikola - A Croation born scientist who discovered and developed AC current. He moved to the US in 1884 and was commisioned to install AC power generators on Niagra Falls. George Westinghouse purchased the patents to his induction motor, and made it the basis of the Westinghouse power system which still underlies the modern electrical power industry today. He also did notable research on high-voltage electricity and wireless communication; at one point creating an earthquake which shook the ground for several miles around his New York laboratory. He also devised a system which anticipated world-wide wireless communications, fax machines, radar, radio-guided missiles and aircraft.

U

UFO - Unidentified Flying Object. Any airborne craft which through performance, aerodynamics, or unusal characteristics, does not conform to any know type of aircraft.

Ufology - The study of the UFO phenomenon.

V

Vandenburg, Hoyt S - Another alleged member of the Majestic-12 Panel. Following a distinguished career in the Army Air Forces he became the second Director of Central Intelligence in 1946, a position he held until May 1947. In August 1948, when a top secret 'Estimate of the Situation' by ATIC offered its opinion that UFOs were interplanetary, Vandenberg, Air Force Chief of Staff at the time, ordered the document to be burned.

W

Walters, Ed - Ed Walters lives in Gulf Breeze were he, his wife and hundreds of the residents have witnessed UFOs. Ed have taken several pictures of the UFOs and written a few books about his experiences.

Walton, Travis - One of the most Famous UFO abduction victims. A more detailed description of his abduction is in the Abduction section below.

White Sands - White Sands Missile Range is located about 100 miles from Roswell and was the site of the first atomic bomb detonation in 1945 (then known as White Sands Proving Ground).

White Sides - A small mountain, formerly on public land along the military border, that once offered an unobstructed view of the secret Groom Lake air base about 13 miles to the southwest. This land, however, is now owned by the government and is no longer legally accessable.

Wright-Patterson AFB - Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, as it is now called, has been at the center of most UFO related retrievals in the USA as well as retrieval cases outside the U.S. The base is alleged to be where all crashed space debris is taken for examination. This debris also includes alleged UFO material as well as space debris from re-entering satellites.

Z

Zeta Reticulli - A binary star system about 52 light years from Earth. Betty and Barney Hill claimed that the aliens that abducted then were from the Zeta Reticulli star system.

Modern UFO History

June 24, 1947 - Kenneth Arnold spotted nine shiny objects flying over the Cascade Mountains in Washington state. Arnold, who had gone up to look for a crashed plane, saw the objects flying over Mount Rainer about approximately 1,500 mph (twice the speed of the fasted aircraft at that time). When questioned about the objects, Arnold said they flew like saucers skipping across water. Bill Becquette then coined the phrase "flying saucer."

July 2, 1947 - This day, a UFO crashed in the New Mexico desert near the town of Corona. This crash is better know under the name Roswell, because that was the name of the nearest military base. The military then issued a statement claiming to have recovered a crashed UFO, then retracted the story the next day.

March 1952 - Project Blue Book is started to find explanations for all the UFO sightings that people report.

Summer of 1952 - That summer, there were many UFO sightings in Washington DC that were never explained. Some craft were even seen flying over the White House. When the sightings first started on July 26, the AFB in Washington called Bolling AFB to scramble two F-94s to take a look. The F-94s, instead, were in Delaware, and it took them over an hour to reach Washington. When the F-94s finally did come into radar contact, the UFOs vanished from the radar screen. When the fighters left, the UFOs came back. The sightings continued until morning.

1964 - Lonnie Zamora, a policeman for Socorro, New Mexico, came upon an egg-shaped craft sitting in a field with apparently two aliens by it. When Zamora went to investigate, the craft started shooting flames out the bottom and took off.

1973 - The Center for UFO Studies is set up by Dr. J. Allen Hynek.

November 1975 - Travis Walton is abducted by aliens.

December, 1980 - Betty Cash, Vicky Landrum, and her grandson Colby Landrum witnessed a UFO hovering over a road in Huffman, Texas. The craft was diamond shape and belching out fire from the bottom. Blocked by the flames, they stopped their car about 65 yards from the object. Betty then got out and stared at the craft. She got back in when her skin was starting to burn from the intense heat. Then, a number of black unmarked helicopters started chasing after it. When they got home, all three of then suffered from vomiting, sunburn, and diarrhea. Many suspect that this is the government's attempt at making a UFO.

November 1987 - This is about the time when Ed Walters claimed to first photograph UFOs. Walters claims that aliens tried to abduct him and his wife but failed. Walters also says that he can sense when a UFO is near by a buzzing sound in his head.
