Background:

Born in a Bajoran refugee camp, Chaz grew up knowing nothing but anger and hatred towards life. He watched as the Cardassian overseerers tortured those he knew, and the few he loved. At the age of 9, his mother was taken as a Cardassian Pleasure Woman. Chaz never saw her again. With no siblings, his life revolved around the only family that he had; his father.

During his early years, his parents never taught him about the ways, and
the beliefs of his people. His mother felt as though the Prophets had abandoned there people, and would never teach her son to believe in "Gods". After her abduction, his father began to talk more often about them. Late at night, he explained to his young son, that this was a test for the Bajoran people. That if they could overcome this, nothing could touch them, and the Bajoran civilization would prosper and stretch throughout the galaxy.

A few months later, everything began to change. Resistance cells had begun to show up within the camp, and soon the populace revolted against their overseerers. Chaz's father attempted to hide his son, the only semblance of his family left, and succeeded, but not before hiding himself. At the age of 10, Chaz watched helplessly as his father was gunned down by Cardassians.

Days later, he was discovered by middle Bajoran aged woman. She attempted to coax him out of the small alcove which his father had hidden him in, and she softly told him that the Cardassians were gone from this place, but they must go quickly, else they would return.

They managed to gain access to one of the ships in the Cardassian hangar along with almost 50 other Bajorans, a few of which had piloted before the occupation had destroyed their lives. They set course for a planet which would hopefully give them asylum; Betazed.

The Betazoid people opened there hearts to the Bajorans, and helped them to rebuild their lives. Kilan, the lady who found young Chaz, took him into her new home, as her own son. At first, it was not easy for Chaz to adapt to his new life. The constant flux of people in the city was such an unseen site, he wasn't sure how to handle it, and would often go and hide; not attending his basic schooling. After several months however, he was able to make the change, and adjust to this new life set before him.

Over the next several years, Chaz completed his schooling, and his
education at home. While Kilan believed that one's education was extremely important, she also wanted Chaz to have a strong hold on the simple things in life, which make it all worth living. She taught him to sculpt, to paint, and to play as many musical instruments as he wanted. While understanding the nature of physics was important, why should you even bother if you can't understand something as simple and lovely as a simple concerto.

As with the nature of political asylum, Chaz was considered a Betazed citizen, and at the proper age, he applied for a position within Starfleet Academy. He had seen how much life had changed for him just getting out of the camps, and onto this peaceful paradise of a planet. How it would change if he were to explore all the planets within the galaxy, or at least within this Federation, he often wondered.

During his course at the Academy, he had for the first time ever,
discovered something that he truly loved; the freedom of piloting. He had never known anything like it, and could never get enough. It was as though as soul now had the freedom to reach the most distance parts of the cosmos.

Upon graduating from the academy, he was assigned to the Orbital space dock as a shuttle pilot. While his grades at the academy would have let him achieve a slight more prestigious assignment, this was the one he wanted. It allowed him to see up close some of the most advanced starships in the fleet.

But soon, restlessness began to kick in, and he started to grow tired of ferrying all the pilots and CO's to their starships; he wanted to fly one. So he put in for a transfer. Unfortunately, the only position available was with the Mars Defense Perimeter. He spent a year there, before being recommended for the Advanced Tactical Training Course offered at Star base 215.

While at SB 215, he received word that he was being reassigned and would not be returning to Mars. A ACHO position had opened up on the Ambassador class USS Constantinople, and that he was to report immediately upon completion of his current course.

He was to transfer aboard at Deep Space Nine. Chaz was a little
uncomfortable with this fact, because it was in the Bajoran sector. While being Bajoran in descent, he had never been to the planet of his people. Upon arrival, he felt a little out of place. He had never been among this many Bajorans, even in the refugee camp as a child. Questioning his place in the scheme of life, he walked along the Promenade. He came across the Bajoran temple there, and the monk asked him if he would like to enter. Not sure of where his life was going, he politely refused, and walked up the stairs to the next level. Stopping by a view port, he peered out into nothingness. The vastness of space. The vastness of his own soul. And then....space began to unfurl upon itself in a surge of light, and power, and the Celestial Temple of the Prophets opened it's eye to look upon him; and he suddenly knew this is where he was supposed to be. Starfleet had given him his dreams, and it was time to look upon the future, and not to dwell upon the emptiness of his past.

The conn aboard the Constantinople was unlike anything he had ever seen. The controls were simplistic, yet responded with such amazing detail, that he and the other conn officers usually left it on manual. He was finally flying a starship.

While aboard, Chaz began to come out of the shell that he had built up around him. His fellow officers were warm, caring people, and he felt as though they were family. He had finally found his niche. And Chaz began to love life like never had.

While manning to conn position one evening, Capt. Aturi stepped onto the bridge and asked Chaz to come to her ready room. They both set on the sofa, while she softly explained to him that there was an opening aboard the Galaxy Class Ajax for a Chief Helm Officer; and that she was going to recommend him for it.

Within the month, he was accepted, and transferred to the Ajax. Over the course of the next year, he proved himself a valuable officer, and a caring friend. After two years aboard the Ajax, the second officer was promoted and given the XO position aboard another ship if the fleet. Captain Hansen, then offered the 2nd Officer's position to Chaz. Happily accepting the responsibility, he realized for the first time, that someday, he wouldn't be sitting in the pilot's seat anymore. While taking to promotion to heart, it suddenly realized that his entire future was shifting. He was now on a command track. Something he'd never really considered before. But the vision of it excited him like nothing else.....including being in the pilot's seat.

For the last two years, Lt. Koranis has showed himself to be an
exceptional officer. A deeply spiritual man, he believes in the founding morals of the Federation. I, Captain Michael Hansen, CO of the USS Ajax, believe that Mr. Koranis is ready to take his place in the command structure of Starfleet. I am hereby referencing his dossier to the Starfleet D-Base in hopes that he will soon be chosen to take the position of Executive Officer aboard a ship in this fine fleet.
